How to Compare Internet Plans in Melbourne? Melbourne is home to Australia's major internet service providers. While this leaves residents tons of options, choosing the best one can be quite a challenge. To help make your decision easier, here are some tips to consider when comparing internet plans in Melbourne Internet Speed The higher the speed, the higher the cost of the plan. To determine what speed you need, check how many devices will be connected and the kinds of activities you are likely to do. For instance, streaming movies or playing online video games requires much faster speeds than sending emails or browsing websites. Also, check the provider's advertised typical evening speed to get an idea of the performance you can expect during peak usage hours. This is especially important if you play online video games or stream movies. Finally, choose the internet plan with enough bandwidth to accommodate the number of connected devices in your household. With too little bandwidth, your internet activities will be slow and unreliable. Connection Type There are several internet connection types in Australia—FTTP, FTTN, FTTB, HFC, and Fixed Wireless. Not all of them are equal. FTTP is often the best choice as it offers faster speeds and more reliable connections. Unfortunately, customers are not free to choose what they can get. If you're looking to upgrade your connection to FTTP, additional costs may apply for certain conditions. To work around this, determine which connection types are available in your area. See which are the most reliable. If you are still unsure, you can always contact Compare Broadband for advice. Data Allowance While most internet providers offer unlimited data plans, some may still have data caps. With unlimited data, you don't need to worry about paying large excess fees or throttled speeds. Getting unlimited data is recommended if you stream lots of high-quality video content or download large files frequently. Otherwise, you may need a plan with more than enough data allowance. Checking your current data usage can help you determine the ideal data you need in an internet plan. You can check your previous internet bill to see how much data you used. Pricing Not all cheap plans are necessarily the best. Not all cheap plans are necessarily the best. These internet services often come with the slowest connection performance, fewer features, and—in some cases—additional fees. Getting an all-inclusive plan covering these costs would be better to save money. Always look for the best internet deals that offer a good balance between price and quality of service. Contract Internet providers offer a choice between 12-month and no lock-in contracts. It's essential to select the contract type that aligns with your specific needs and circumstances. A no lock-in contract may be a more suitable choice if you anticipate relocating or switching providers in the near future, as it provides greater flexibility. Conversely, a 12-month contract can often lead to long-term savings, as these plans frequently include discounts and additional benefits. As you compare your options, make sure to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each contract type, keeping in mind your future plans and preferences. Perks and Extras Many providers offer additional features such as free calls, waived setup fees, or discounted application fees. You can also consider bundling services with your internet. This can lead to more convenience and potential cost savings for customers. Some providers may even throw in a free router or modem. This can help customers save on upfront equipment costs and ensures compatibility with the provider's network. Customer Support Reliable customer support is crucial, especially when dealing with technical issues or billing inquiries. Check if the provider offers local support and look for multiple communication channels like chat, hotline, or self-service options. By considering all these factors, you can make a more informed decision when comparing internet plans in Melbourne. For a faster and more efficient internet plan comparison in Melbourne, contact Compare Broadband today. We'll walk you through the best internet deals in your area. Download speed measures how fast data is transferred from the internet to your device. A higher download speed means you'll have a seamless experience downloading files, streaming videos, or browsing websites. Conversely, upload speed measures the rate of data transfer from your device to the internet. Having a fast upload speed is important for those who are frequently uploading large files, video conferencing, and online gaming. Several factors can impact the actual speeds you'll get from your NBN plan. This includes the number of users, the distance from the exchange, and the equipment used. Nevertheless, the average download and upload speeds in Melbourne indicate the performance that can be expected from the fixed line connections in the area. Checking the typical evening speed is crucial as it reflects the actual performance you can expect during high-traffic periods, ensuring a reliable and consistent browsing experience. Typical evening speed refers to the average internet speed a provider delivers during peak hours 7 pm-11 pm, when most users are online. This increased demand for bandwidth can cause the connection to slow down, especially on shared networks. Below is a guide on the minimum typical evening speed per each speed tier. Internet Speed Typical Busy Period Speed between 7 pm and 11 pm Typical use Basic Evening Speed Less than 15mbps Download Speeds Web browsing, email Standard Typical Evening Speed 15 Mbps Download Speeds HD video streaming plus web browsing Standard Plus Evening Speed 30 Mbps Download Speeds 4K video streaming plus music streaming Premium Evening Speed 60 Mbps Download Speeds 4K video streaming plus online gaming Basic Evening Speed This speed tier has actual speeds of up to 25 Mbps and will support a video streaming experience at DVD quality 480p. It is good for users who surf and stream but not for most users who use their internet connection for purposes that require higher bandwidth. Standard Evening Speed This evening speed offers up to 50 Mbps and HD quality 720p for a lag-free streaming experience. It is ideal for users who surf and stream. Platinum Evening Speed With up to 100 Mbps, you can do HD video streaming on multiple devices at the same time with no lag, have a flawless gaming experience online, and browse the web quickly. Plus, it's 4k streaming-ready! It is great for heavy internet users who surf, stream and game. Standard Plus Evening Speed This speed tier enables streaming on multiple devices in HD, gaming with reduced latency, web browsing at lightning speeds, and supports a 4k streaming experience. It is good for the heavy user who surfs, plays games and uses bandwidth-hungry applications like video calling. Premium Evening Speed This speed tier offers up to 150 Mbps which is great for streamers and gamers who want the best online experience. The premium evening speed is also ideal for households home to many users and devices who want to stream multiple HD videos or play games simultaneously, work from home with fast internet speeds, or video chat on multiple connected devices. Factors that Affect NBN Internet Plan Speed Several factors can affect the speed of your NBN connection. These include In-home setup Where you place your modem and Wi-Fi router, and any interference from other devices can significantly impact your internet speed. Place your modem is placed in a central location away from walls and other obstructions. Keep your Wi-Fi router away from other electronic devices. Also, check if your modem is NBN-compatible. Otherwise, you can purchase one from your provider. Time of the day Internet usage spikes during peak hours evenings which can cause speeds to slow down. If your connection is slower during these times, try going online during off-peak hours. Content type and size Downloading large files or streaming high-quality videos can take longer and slow down your internet speed. To reduce the impact of these activities, limit your downloads during peak hours. Also, try connecting your devices using an ethernet cable wired. Network technology The type of NBN technology available at your premises can also affect your internet speed. Some connection types still use copper wires, which can cause slower speeds. Number of devices and people The more devices connected to your internet, the slower your speed will be. Limit the number of devices going online simultaneously. Or, consider upgrading to a higher speed plan. Provider and speed plan The provider you choose and the speed you select can also impact your connection. Make sure you select an internet plan with a speed that can accommodate your online activities. Provider network configuration Network configuration refers to how your provider configures their network, including bandwidth management and prioritisation. Check how your chosen NBN internet provider configures their network to ensure you get the best possible speeds.
